A Taste of the Fields: Sunflowers, Local Flavour & Crispy Gnocchi

There’s something about being surrounded by sunflowers that just makes everything feel better. Recently, we had the chance to spend a beautiful day out at The Sunflower Farm, located just outside Beaverton, Ontario, partnering with Durham Tourism, Durham Farm Fresh, and local chef Alex Page — and it was the perfect mix of local food, fresh air, and community.
Located in the scenic countryside near Beaverton, The Sunflower Farm is a seasonal showstopper. It’s the kind of place that instantly puts a smile on your face and reminds you how special Ontario’s agricultural landscape really is. Whether you’re there for photos, a picnic, or a peaceful walk, it’s a reminder of the beauty and richness right in our own backyards.
One of the highlights of the day was a live cooking demo by Alex Page, who showcased just how creative (and delicious) local ingredients can be. Cooking right on-site among the sunflowers, Alex leaned into what Durham does best — fresh, seasonal, and grown close to home.
On the menu: Crispy Gnocchi with Sunflower Seed Pesto. Golden, crispy gnocchi paired with a vibrant pesto made using sunflower seeds instead of the usual nuts — a perfect nod to the setting and the farm itself. It was simple, clever, and packed with flavour, proving that local ingredients don’t need much fuss to shine.

Events like this really highlight the strength of Durham’s food community. From farms to chefs to tourism partners, it’s all about working together to celebrate what’s grown and made right here. Whether you’re a foodie, a farm lover, or just looking for a great day out near Beaverton, experiences like this show how connected local food and local places truly are.

If you want to recreate Alex’s dish at home and bring a little Sunflower Farm magic into your own kitchen, you can find the recipe below.
Trust us — it’s worth it.
