Facebook Live Tours with Durham Region Farmers!

Durham Region farmers offered behind-the-scenes virtual farm tours throughout 2021. Each tour was hosted by a farmer and shared a beyond-the-farm gate view of many different types of farms. The Facebook Live tours were broadcasted live from the organization’s Facebook page @DurhamFarmConnections and will be available for on-demand viewing after the broadcast for a period of one week.

Tours took place on many different types of farms including beef cattle, maple syrup, egg, greenhouse, field crop, dairy, apple orchard, sheep, peas & strawberries, hay, herb (specialty tea), wheat, apple cider, field vegetable, a bee yard, an on-farm dairy and a flower farm. Over 15 tours were offered, starting in March 2021 and finishing up in September 2021. As a thank you to the farm hosts, a donation was made for each tour to a Durham Region food bank by Durham Farm Connections.

“Previously, Durham Farm Connections hosted a school program and open house each year welcoming 1,200 students and 1,000 visitors to Whitby’s Vipond Memorial Arena each April,” says Sandra Jibb, a volunteer with the organization. “This virtual approach allowed us to offer a new platform for engagement between farmers and those interested in speaking with a farmer.”

Durham Farm Connections is a sub-committee of the Durham Region Federation of Agriculture, an organization representing over 1100 farmers. Durham Farm Connections connects consumers, farmers, and decision-makers with opportunities to enhance knowledge, understanding and appreciate of agriculture and food in Durham Region. Durham Farm Connections provides collaborative, innovative approaches to agricultural education.
