We spent a beautiful day partnering with Durham Tourism, Durham Farm Fresh, and local chef Alex Page at the always-charming Archibald’s Orchard & Estate Winery—and honestly, it was the perfect setting to celebrate everything local.

Located in Bowmanville, this family-run farm has deep roots in Durham Region. Archibald’s is owned and operated by the Archibald family, who have been growing apples here for generations. What began as a wholesale apple orchard has grown into a destination where visitors can pick their own apples, browse the farm store, sip on apple cider and fruit wines made right on site, and soak in the beauty of the orchard throughout the seasons. Their focus has always stayed the same: quality fruit, local pride, and sharing the farm experience with the community.

One of the highlights of the day was a live cooking demo by Chef Alex Page, who is known for his passion for local ingredients and showcasing what Durham Region producers have to offer. Surrounded by apple trees and fresh farm air, Alex demonstrated how easy (and delicious) cooking local can be.
For the demo, Alex made a cozy Apple, Squash & Chipotle Soup, using seasonal ingredients that truly reflect the region. The sweetness of local apples and squash paired perfectly with the smoky heat of chipotle—it was comforting, flavourful, and felt like fall in a bowl.
The recipe itself is approachable and perfect for recreating at home. If you want to try it yourself, you can find the full recipe here: 👉 Apple, Squash & Chipotle Soup – Page’s Platefuls (Durham Tourism)
Between the orchard views, the wine, and a warm bowl of soup made with ingredients grown just down the road, it was a perfect reminder of why supporting local matters—and why Durham Region is such a special place to eat, drink, and explore.
