Digging Into Local: A Fun Day Learning About Potatoes at Bragg Farms

2 min read

Sometimes we don't have to travel far to discover something new, have a great day, and enjoy delicious food. In fact, some of the best experiences can be found right in our own backyard!

We recently had the opportunity to spend some time at Bragg Farms with Durham Region, Chef Alex Page, and Durham Farm Fresh, learning all about potatoes, local agriculture, and the people who grow the food that ends up on our tables.

And we discovered something pretty exciting along the way — you can pick your own potatoes at Bragg Farms!

Learning Where Our Food Comes From

It's easy to take the food we eat for granted. We see potatoes at the grocery store, at restaurants, and on our dinner tables, but getting out onto a farm gives us a whole new appreciation for how that food gets there.

Being at Bragg Farms gave us the chance to learn more about potatoes and how they are grown, while also getting our hands a little dirty!

One of the highlights was heading out to the fields to pick our own sweet potatoes. There's something special about harvesting your own food and knowing that it was grown right here locally.

We brought some sweet potatoes home with us, and they were absolutely delicious!

Get Out and Explore Local

So, the next time you're wondering what to do for a day trip or family outing, consider looking a little closer to home.

Visit a farm.Pick some produce.Talk to a farmer.Try something grown locally.Cook a meal with Ontario ingredients. And most importantly — have fun doing it!

Our day at Bragg Farms was a delicious reminder that there is so much to see, do, learn, and taste in our own backyard.

And those sweet potatoes we picked ourselves? Let's just say they didn't last very long!

Growing Connections Through Local Food

Events like these are about much more than great recipes. They're about celebrating the farmers, producers, and businesses that make Durham Region's agricultural community thrive.

By bringing together Durham Tourism, Durham Farm Fresh, Durham Farm Connections and Chef Alex Page, we continue to strengthen the connection between local food, local farms, and the people who enjoy them. Whether you're visiting for the farm experiences, shopping the market, or tasting seasonal recipes, every visit is an opportunity to support local agriculture and discover something new.

Here's to fresh flavours, local farms, and many more opportunities to connect with the people and places that grow our food.
