2010 Durham Farm Connections Highlights

In 2011, the Farm Connections Committee held the second annual high school program. The daylong event was held in September at Anderson C.V.I. in Whitby in partnership with the Durham District School Board. Designed to align with curriculum requirements for Grade 9 science, Grade 11 biology and environmental science and Grade 12 biology, classes attended the program for one class period (75 minutes). Approximately 320 students rotated through eight agriculture-themed stations covering the following topics:

  • Introduction to Agriculture in Canada
  • Technology in Agriculture
  • Enzyme Activity in Food Production
  • Soil Health and Land Management
  • Genetically Modified Organisms and Crop Production
  • Green Energy
  • Biofuels
  • Pesticides
  • Organic Farming

The stations were interactive, using props and videos to engage the students. Each station was designed to expose students to the science of agriculture and to encourage them to consider careers in the agribusiness field.
